It's summer!  I guess it's still unofficially summer, but in our household, school is out and that means it's summer!  That also means lots of road trips.  We typically go to area lakes that tend to be within 2-3 hours of home all throughout the summer.  Then, we usually do one LONG road trip every summer too.  When you have kids, sometimes road trips are just so much easier than flying.  I've also discovered a few must-have tips for road trips and the perfect Sweet & Salty Trail Mix to take along with us.

Let's face it, when we go on a road trip, road trip snacks are at the top of the list.  We head to Sam's Club to stock up on the latest quick and easy snacks and treats for the road along with drinks too.  I love that we can buy in bulk and get great prices, meaning less stops for snacks along the way.  We even stock up for our weekend lake trips too.  It's a must, because we always get hungry out on the water.

Did you know that you could order online and pick up at Sam's Club?  That's become a weekly stop for us.  I can order a few days before and then after school, the kids and I can run in to the service desk and everything we need is ready to go!  It's so EASY!Check out Club Pickup HERE

Between going to the lake and on road trips, we've discovered what is easy to pack and take with us and what's not.  There are just some things that weren't meant for road trips.

One thing I love to have on EVERY road trip is a super easy snack mix.  I decided to pick up the M&M'S® Peanut Chocolate Candy Pantry Size Jar at Sam's Club to make this tasty mix.  Plus, I had plenty left if we felt the need for a few pieces of candy along the way too.

The great thing about integrating it into a trail mix is that you get a little bit of sweet paired with salty.

How do you serve it on a road trip?

The best way to store treats for road trips is in plastic containers that have a tight lid.  In this case, we use small square containers that perfectly portion out about a cup of snack mix.  That gives each person a great portion size, plus it's simple to store if you want a little bit now and the rest later.  The airtight lid means that it won't go bad either, it's perfect the entire way to your destination!

  • Small Plastic Containers with Airtight Lids

These are perfect for portion control, plus great to store foods in while you head to your destination and the lids help protect your car from a spilled mess too!

  • Stock Up on Individual Packaged Foods

Sam's Club is the perfect place to stock up on individually packaged items.  It's going to be much more affordable to stock up and save instead of running into the store along the way for snack items.

  • Don't Forget the Drinks

It's best to stock up at Sam's Club on drinks as well like water for the road.  We have found the small size waters are the best bet for road trips.  They are the perfect size for kids without waste.

  • Fruits & Veggies for the Road

Fruits & veggies always store well on the road, plus you can put them in the cooler too.  These are perfect to portion out in the cup size plastic containers, then just open one up and enjoy it as a snack.

  • Snack Bag for Kids and Adults

We have found it works well to have a snack bag just for each child, so they get their own snacks, and one for the adults.  This also helps control portion sizes too, so that there is a good balance.

These are some tips we've discovered over the years and they work well for us.  Do you have any tips you would add?
